The Phrase That Pays

JD – Friendship multiplies the good of life and divides the evil. – Baltasar Gracian

EB – You better cut the pizza into 4 pieces, cause I’m not hungry enough to eat 6. – Yogi Berra

JW – Steel and flesh… life and death… war. – Artemesia

MS – If I had 8 hours to chop down a tree, I would spend 6 sharpening my axe. – Abraham Lincoln

Friendship is a unique and special blessing in our lives.

The quote above hits the nail on the head.

Friendship multiplies those special moments and memories and diffuses the hurt and heartache of the bad times.

Invest in a friendship today.

Make a call. Send a text. Hit somebody up on the FaceBox (or whatever the kids are doing these days).

Make it a great day.

The line from this one that caught was:

If only you saw what I can see

I have found this to be true of most people.

Most people don’t see all the possibilities that lie before them.

Most people don’t see all the potential inside them.

Most people don’t see their own beauty.

Consider today’s email a reminder.

Somewhere out there someone is thinking this about you:

If only you saw what I can see….

Look for the best in yourself. Nurture and grow that part of you that is uniquely and wonderfully you.

Make it a great day.

Don’t sell out your virtue and your value for something you think you want. Judas got the money, but he threw it all away and hung himself because he was so unhappy with himself. – Jim Rohn

I debated on whether or not to send out this quote as it is a little harsh in its tone.

I decided to send it out because I think the message is that important.

At some point we will all be presented the opportunity to sell out our virtues and values in exchange for something else tempting.

Jim’s reminder is that Judas did get the money. He got what he wanted in the short run. The exchange occurred.

But it wasn’t worth it. He got a bad deal. He exchanged his virtues and values for forty pieces of silver. Those same forty pieces of silver would never buy those virtues and values.

Is there something in your life where you are making a bad exchange?

Something where you are exchanging your values and virtues in exchange for something that seems tempting, but isn’t worth the price you are paying?

If you aren’t already, you will likely be tempted at some point in the future. Now is the time to put your true values and virtues into perspective so those temptations can be properly weighed against their cost.

Write down your personal why or mission statement

Write out your family’s values.

Make it clear what your values are worth. That way forty pieces of silver will seem like what they really are…meaningless compared to your values.

Make it a great day.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

This question popped into my head recently, I added to my list of ideas for the daily attitude email and it has been haunting me ever since.

At first glance, it didn’t seem like too hard of a question to answer, but after looking at it for a couple of weeks the answers seem harder and harder to find.

Think of those moments in your life when you let fear get in the way.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid of what others might think?

What would you ask for if you weren’t afraid of being rejected?

What would you risk if you weren’t afraid of the blow to your ego?

What goal would you take on if you weren’t afraid to fail?

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

Maybe it’s unrealistic to tackle all of these things at once and conquer all your fears by the end of the day.

Maybe just try one. Find one thing where you were letting fear hold you back and push through. Decide to take the plunge.

Make it a great day.

Competition is the keen cutting edge of business, always shaving away at costs. – Henry Ford

In our last Town Hall, Erik mentioned that we are likely to feel more competitive pressure over the years to come.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been playing basketball on Wednesday nights.

Last night, I came to a realization.

Competition is fun. It is fun to compete. It is fun to win. It’s hard to lose, but fun to get right back up and try again.

Competition can make us better. Both individually and as collective at Mavidea.

Henry Ford’s example of shaving away at costs is just one example.

Competition will force us to be more creative.

Competition will force us to become more nimble.

Competition will force us to become more efficient.

Competition will force us to remove those rough edges and deliver a better service.

Let’s all embrace competition. Let’s embrace the opportunity to enter into the arena and do our best.

Make it a great day.

"Give whatever you are doing and whoever you are with the gift of your attention." — Jim Rohn

I was part of an interesting conversation yesterday where we were discussing how to make customers feel “loved”.

A core element that ran through the conversation was giving them your undivided attention.

As technology, social media and the pace of life push us to move from task to task as quickly as possible, taking the time to give someone your undivided attention stands out more and more.

Think of the last time someone gave you their undivided attention. How did that make you feel?

Today, challenge yourself to make others feel that same way.

Each time that you are in a conversation with someone give them your attention. No phones, computer or other distractions; just your focused attention.

I have a sneaky suspicion that if you do this, you will end the day thinking “wow, that was a great day”.

Make it a great day.

The Serenity Prayer

The full text of the original "Serenity Prayer" written by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

GOD, grant me the serenity

to accept the things

I cannot change,

Courage to change the

things I can, and the

wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardship as the

pathway to peace.

Taking, as He did, this

sinful world as it is,

not as I would have it.

Trusting that He will make

all things right if I

surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy

in this life, and supremely

happy with Him forever in

the next.

Amen
