Man is what he reads. – Joseph Brodsky

Read anything good lately?

If you haven’t, pick up something good and get started.

If you have – keep it up!

Since we’re out at Barrett this song seemed appropriate.

The auction environment is an interesting one. A certain electricity and excitement in the air as the cars cross the block.

Some are winners….some not so much.

Probably a lot of life lessons happening.

Everyone took a risk putting their vehicle up for auction.

Because you to take the risk if you want the upside.

Make it a great day.

Defeat may serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out. – Edwin Markham

Winning isn’t always the way.

Sometimes you lose.

If there wasn’t a possibility of losing then it wouldn’t be any fun.

We can learn and grow through defeat and failure.

We can shape and mold our character in moments of disappointment.

How do you respond to failure in your life?

Make it a great day.

We did it! Another imperfect, messy, kind of scary transfer of power from one President to the next.

In my older age, I try to do my best to support this imperfect country of ours.

To find my way to support whoever is President at the time.

Not to agree with their policies or follow them blindly.

But to support the office. The idea that we elect leaders to do their best for us as a country. That they and their families make sacrifices on our behalf and for that we should be grateful.

Are some of them jerks? Maybe.

Are some of them great? Maybe.

Am I a little naïve? Maybe.

In the end, God is in control. If we can humble ourselves enough to allow Him to work through us we can get behind the ideals that have made this American experiment so exceptional.

Make it a great day.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Martin Luther King Jr.

One of the persistent themes that flows throughout speeches and quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. was that of service.

He seemed to understand that service to others was part of the path to prosperity that he and the people he led were seeking.

Think about the situation though.

They were persecuted, belittled, beaten and mistreated in every way possible. It would have been difficult to live in that environment and have your thoughts be focused on serving others.

But he knew that love and service would win out. He knew that the only way to rise above it all was to be better than their oppressors.

As we think about Martin Luther King Jr. let’s remember to focus on service to others regardless of our current circumstances. It is the sure path to victory and happiness in the long run.

Make it a great day.

Another reminder on keeping the right perspective.

The song talks about praising in all different circumstances.

The Bible says to rejoice always, pray continuously and to give thanks in all circumstances.

I think one of the interesting things about verses like this is that it is for our benefit.

God isn’t waiting around for us to fill his cup with our praise and thanks.

He wants us to find joy by focusing on the good that can be found if we look for it.

Make it a great day.

You can’t expect to hit the jackpot if you don’t put a few nickels in the machine. – Flip Wilson

January is also a great time to think about where you might take on some more risk.

I personally wouldn’t suggest the slot machine, but there’s probably somewhere for you to take a chance.

Take the risk of stopping to do something.

Or the risk of starting something new.

Or the risk of saying that thing that has been on your mind.

Use wisdom. But take a chance.

Make it a great day.

Meaghan wrote this quote on the board at home so I went and found this daily attitude email from 2016 to send out again…

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is a great quote for the beginning of the year.

Each day can be the best day of the year.

If we can have that attitude 2016 will turn out to be quite a year.

So, let’s get started on the best day of the year.

Make it a great day.
