Every time the kiddos watch Zootopia, this song leaves me feeling good.

It reminds me that while I make a lot of mistakes, hopefully I’m learning and growing along the way.

It reminds me to actively seek out challenge and growth, even when it causes discomfort and (temporarily) failure.

Make it a great day.

The gain is not the having of children; it is the discovery of love and how to be loving. – Polly Berrien Berends

I think this is true of a lot of the important relationships in our lives.

Friends, family, coworkers, customers, vendors, etc.

In these relationships we (to varying degrees) discover love and how to be loving.

How to be loving when it’s easy and how to be loving when it’s not.

Jesus asked us to love our neighbors as ourselves. To love and be loving.

And He went on give example after example of “who is our neighbor”. I don’t think he left many options for not being loving to those we come across.

I have come to believe that the twist in all of this is that He suggested this for our benefit. Not for those who feel that love.

We will experience more joy if we discover how to love and be loving.

Make it a great day.

Resending this daily attitude email from a few years ago….

Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone. – Andy Stanley

The last couple of days, Annie has been watching “The Blind Side”.

It’s a story of an affluent family that takes in a young man without a home. The young man goes on to play professional football.

It reminded me of the Andy Stanley quote above. The family in that story did just that.

The future of that young man was forever changed because of the love of that family.

How could you reach out and help just one person today?

Make it a great day.

“It won’t always go your way, so you can’t get trapped in this idea that just because you’ve imagined a possibility for yourself that you somehow deserve it. Your entitled mind is dead weight. Cut it loose. Don’t focus on what you think you deserve. Take aim on what you are willing to earn!”

― David Goggins, Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

Listened to David Goggins on Joe Rogan the other day and so I have a lot of his quotes and ideas swirling around in my head.

I don’t think he gets everything right, but I think he might have the idea above right (and a few others).

The idea that we don’t deserve comfort or good luck or money or success.

That pushing through the uncomfortable moments (even creating them on purpose) is what pushes us to places where we can do and be more.

Why push through though?

To be of more service with love.

I think that’s the trick/part that doesn’t get mentioned enough – we are should push through so that we can help more.

We get one chance here to do the most good we can. And we can’t do that if we’re out of shape, have spent all our money and haven’t read a book in a couple of years.

To be ready for the moments that matter we must have pushed through and built a better us.

Make it a great day.

The absence of alternatives clears the mind marvelously. – Henry Kissinger

I’ve remember a marketing study from when I was in school where people actually bought more jelly when the store limited the number of choices to just a few instead of tons of them.

Our lives and goals are served well by simplicity and fewer choices.

What’s something you could simplify for this week?

Same thing for lunch every day?

Set aside your clothes for the week ahead of time?

Deciding now to exercise each morning?

No fried food?

Cut out the sweets?

One thing. Something simple. Remove the alternatives. Clear your mind.

Make it a great day.

What a great idea – “I’m into something good”.

Focus on the good today and this weekend.

Family. Friends. Faith. Fun.

Whatever is good, focus on that.

Make it a great day.

The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention. – John Burroughs

I have come to believe that developing a bias towards action is a cornerstone habit to develop.

Not action every time, all the time.

Sometimes slow and deliberate is the way to go.

But a general lean towards movement and momentum serve us well over time.

Will it go perfectly? Nope.

Will it work out every time? Nope.

Will you be in total control? Nope.

Over the long run deeds will win out over intentions.

Make it a great day.

Dear Lord, I’m so grateful I’m still loved. – Vivien Leigh

Reminder – you are loved. Still. It hasn’t stopped.

For most of us, we’re loved more than we remember and act like.

We get frustrated easily. We lose our tempers over small, inconsequential happenings in our lives. We give up quickly. We don’t take chances and play it safe as if money, status, and stuff really matter most.

You are loved.

Act like it.

Smile, a lot. Laugh and dance. Forget about all the stuff, money and status and focus on the important stuff.

Make it a great day.

Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World. – Christopher Columbus

Meaghan’s grandmother was known for saying “Columbus took a chance, so should I” (especially while playing cards).

Leaving the Old World was a risk.

And the best part was that what he found was something he didn’t think he was going to find.

He set out for one destination and instead found something else – something he couldn’t have imagined.

The same can happen for us. If we take a chance and move forward towards positive change, we must just end up somewhere we couldn’t have imagined.

Make it a great day.

Daily Attitude Email 10 09 23

Found this old daily attitude email and wanted to resend it (even thought it’s extra corny)…..

I recently heard someone tell the story of how when they were a teenager, their mother told them that their actual birthday was in August instead of in October like they had been told their whole life.

The funny part was that her reaction. She wondered how it was possible that her astrological sign could be different. After all, her current sign was so totally her.

After a while, she realized that her new sign was so totally her as well and adjusted quite nicely.

This shows just how powerful the mind is. Whatever our sign, if we read and believe it to be accurate, we will make our reality match up with our horosco

And if what we put into our mind has an effect on how our day turns out, we better be careful on what we put in there.

This got me thinking. What if you could write your own horoscope? What would you write for yourself?

Here is mine for today:

Today is going to be a great day. Everything will seem to be falling into place. Remember to treat others as you would like to be treated. And take a minute to smell the roses today, great days like today only come once.

Take a minute and write one for yourself.

Make it a great day.
