I can tell that we are gonna be friends.
What a good and positive thought as we start the day.
If we start the day looking for friends, we are sure to find them.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. – Mahatma Gandhi
Part of exhibiting love is taking some risk.
We can’t really love without putting our heart on the line.
We have to risk the breaking of that heart in order to love the way we were meant to.
Make it a great day.

“Busy is the new stupid.” – Ed Baldwin
Over the years I have become more and more convinced how “busy” has become a meaningless throw away word.
Something that just gets put in the place where another word should be instead, like good or nice or stuff or like or …..
The interesting thing about this one though is that at some point a lot of us bought into it. We bought into the idea that more busy equals more better.
We fill our time (and our homes and our cars and our….) with more and more busy until we feel like we are “winning” the busy contest.
Only to find out later that we are all the same amount of busy. 24 hours passes at exactly the same rate for us as it does Bono (or someone else who you think is really important).
Today I give you permission (ignore the fact that I have no actual power over you) to let go of busy. Let go of trying to cram it all in. Decide on what is important and do that. Make a top 5 list for the day (or a top 1 list to start).
And then do it again tomorrow.
Do it enough days in a row to build a habit.
Make it a way of life.
On second thought, maybe there is a way to win the “busy” game. Stop playing it.
Make it a great day.

A big idea I’ve tried to pass on to the kids – you are worth it.
You are worth doing it right.
You are worth treating others fairly.
You are worth being selfless.
You are worth doing the hard work.
You are worth the self-discipline.
What I mean by this is that your future and your happiness in part depend on the choices you make today. And you’re worth making the good choices. You are worth developing yourself into a person of character.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made by a Creator who loves you more than you can imagine. There is NOTHING you can do that will change His mind about you. He’s all in.
You are the one and only you.
Make it a great day.

PS – the flip side of this is true too. Everyone else is worth it. Everyone else is worth all the love and support we can muster. Everyone else is worth all the respect and accountability that you deserve and desire. Everyone else is worth the best you.
A daily attitude email from a few years back..
This is a Winston Churchill speech that is particularly poignant on the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Two quotes in particular stood out to me:
“But there was one thing about which there was never any doubt. The courage, the unconquerable grit and stamina of our people, showed itself from the very outset. Without that all would have failed. Upon that rock, all stood unshakable.”
In the face of all the evils of the world we must have faith and belief that courage, grit and stamina from those on the side of good will win out. No matter the test, no matter the difficulty, that which is good and worthy will prevail.
“You do your worst – and we will do our best.”
When faced with the evils of the world it can be tempting to lower ourselves to those standards. Instead we need to raise ours.
The best way for us to honor those who have fallen and those who have sacrificed is to do and be our best. Others have given up their lives that we may have the opportunity to exercise this freedom. Don’t let it slip by.
Make it a great day.

Smile!
Great reminder for today.
Even if you aren’t in the mood – smile.
It’s a choice we can make even if the midst of difficulties.
Make it a great day.

It is not love that should be depicted as blind, but self-love. – Voltaire
That one sure stings a little. Maybe hits a little too close to home. Maybe I’m the only one?
As I get older my selective blindness has become more and more clear. I’m not good enough to pick it out ahead of time, all the time, but I sure can tell that I’m not seeing the whole picture.
I convince myself that my ideas are good.
The stuff I want is necessary.
That my desires and wants are best for everybody.
That I have everyone’s best interests at heart.
That I’ll do better with the diet and exercise tomorrow.
That a few more minutest of TV won’t hurt.
What are you blind to? Who in your life might better see things as they are? Who might serve as an accountability partner?
Make it a great day.

PS – When you see me doing any of these things – please call me out!
Less is more. – Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
This quote is a good reminder that we should not fall into the trap of “more”.
Where might your life be better with less?
Less worry?
Less stuff?
Less drama?
Less lunch?
Less chasing your tail?
Make it a great day.

There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. – Henry Ford
Labor Day is a great reminder for me that there is joy and value in work.
As life becomes more and more comfortable for most of the world we are at the point where we have to be reminded.
To be reminded that a change in attitude is in order when doing the labor in our lives and to be thankful for those, past and present, who labor to create the ease and comfort we have become accustomed to.
Make it a great day.

September!
Hard to believe how quickly another year is going by.
Time to focus on what’s most important.
To not let the moments go by.
To make the most of every day.
Make it a great day.
