Empathy has no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘You’re not alone.’ – Brene Brown

Empathy is something I feel a constant need to work on.

Just when I think I’m getting it, I miss the mark terribly.

Maybe it’s just one of those things that we never completely master.

Either way – maybe you and I could practice today?

Try to imagine how others are feeling during your interactions.

Imagine their perspective and point of view.

Imagine how you might feel and think in their situation.

Ask some trusted people how you are doing.

Make an effort.

Make it a great day.

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point. – C. S. Lewis

In the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” Steven Covey talks about having “integrity in the moment of decision” when it comes to managing our time.

What he means is that when it comes time to make choices about how we spend our time we must choose with integrity to our values and vision for our lives.

The quote about courage explains this well. Courage is making the hard decision right now to spend our time with integrity to our goals and vision.

If you wrote down or decided on some important goals for this year (or this week), I am guessing this integrity has been tested.

You have been tempted to watch TV instead of exercising.

You have been tempted to spend some money that wasn’t in the budget.

You have been tempted to check your FaceBox at dinner.

Whatever your resolution or goals, your integrity and courage will be tested.

Stick with it. You can do it. You can make the courageous choice. Because you were built for greatness. You weren’t built to give in easy and to let your life pass you by.

Make it a great day.

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying ‘I will try again tomorrow’. – Mary Anne Radmacher

Tuesday morning. If you’re like me, you’ve already missed the mark on something for the week.

Now is the time for a little courage. To keep going. To not give in to the voices that tell you to give in and give up.

Start again.

Make a good choice for lunch.

Get those work out clothes ready for the morning.

Crack open that book, even if just for a minute or two.

Make it a great day.

“This is the true joy in life: Being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and, as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” – George Bernard Shaw

I saw this quoted the other day and wanted to share these powerful words with everyone.

Does this describe you:

A mighty purpose….

A force of nature….

Or does this describe you:

A feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances…

Complaining that the whole world will not devote itself to making you happy…

We all have the same opportunity to find our purpose. To clarify as best we can. To live it every day.

And when we do….

Our splendid torch, which we have a hold for the moment, will burn brightly before we pass it on to the next generations.

If you haven’t taken the time to write down a personal mission statement or purpose statement, hopefully this has inspired you to spend some time working on one.

Make it a great day.

Friday Morning Toe Tapper

Slow tapper on this one but the initial lyrics got me.

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Life is hard (and wonderful and joyful and a lot of other things too). We can get a little banged up and beat up along the way. Sometimes we need someone to patch us up and nurse us back to health.

Maybe you’re a little banged up right now. Maybe you need to help patch up a loved one.

Whichever side you are on, the truth is that we are in this together and no one makes it through alone.

Make it a great day.

Bonus video – https://youtu.be/cmr-NzAodTY – Hallelujah! In the end, if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior – Jesus will fix it all up in the end.

Found this DAE from a few years ago and wanted to send it out again on the first day of school for this year.

Back to school day at the Davis house, so I thought I would start everyone’s Monday off with a little Kid President.

As usual, he mixes goofy and smart into this video pretty well.

I particularly like the question – what are you teaching the world?

Whether you like it or not, you are teaching others something.

Our choices, attitudes and thoughts show through for others to learn from as we go about our day.

Jim Rohn uses the words “behold” and “beware” a lot in his speeches, and I think it fits here too.

Behold all of the good things being taught around us and by us.

Beware all of the negative being taught and shown around us.

Make today a day of positive teaching.

Make it a great day.

What would be left of our tragedies if an insect were to present us his? – Emil Cioran

For some reason I like the non-sensical ideas like this.

Ideas that help us put things in a different perspective.

Most of the time we have it pretty good.

Is suffering real? Yep. Inevitable? Probably. Insurmountable? Probably not. Good for us? Seems likely.

A change in perspective helps us understand what we can do, how we should react, and helps us see things differently.

Make it a great day.

What’s weighing on the most right now?

Need to forgive someone?

Need to ask for forgiveness?

Worrying about something bad that could happen?

Facing a big choice?

Frustrated with yourself and a bad habit?

Worried about your marriage/current relationship?

I’m sure you’ve thought of at least one thing by now….and so has everyone else.

A saying some of you have heard me saying is “there is a whole lot of life going on around here”. It’s true everywhere you go. People have a whole lot of life going on. Most people have something weighing on them.

What should you do about it?

Take action – work to move forward to let go or get to work on what is weighing on you.

Show grace – work to be kind and patient with others.

Make it a great day.

Spent a couple of days golfing last week/weekend and it reminded me of this email from a few years ago.

Rannulph Junuh: You really love this game, don’t you?

Hardy Greaves: It’s the greatest game there is.

Rannulph Junuh: You really think so?

Hardy Greaves: Ask anybody. It’s fun. It’s hard and you stand out there on that green, green grass, and it’s just you and the ball and there ain’t nobody to beat up on but yourself; just like Mister Newnan keeps hittin’ himself with the golf club every time he gets angry. He’s broken his toe three times on account of it. It’s the only game I know that you can call a penalty on yourself, if you’re honest, which most people are. There just ain’t no other game like it.

This back and forth from “The Legend of Bagger Vance” is one of my favorites.

I’ve tried to play a little more golf this summer and it’s been a great reminder of the value of doing something fun (and difficult).

Golf is a great place to practice and live out some great life lessons….

You can hit a great shot, but end up in a poor spot – life’s not fair.

Your score and your integrity matter.

Green grass, fresh air and trees blowing in the wind are good for the soul.

Life is best when done with good friends.

Make it a great day.

Good summer time jam as we inch closer to the end of summer and the start of another school year.

It reminds me of high school and all the summer time spent goofing off with friends.

Sitting around or driving around doing nothing but hanging out.

I’ve been reminded a few times lately that this kind of idle free time together with others helps build and cement relationships.

Think about how you are spending your time.

Are you allowing enough free time with the relationships that matter?

Taking the wife out on enough dates?

Golfing with your friends?

Watching a movie with the kiddos?

Calling that old friend just to say hi?

Find some time to spend with someone who matters this weekend.

Easy, relaxed, free time.

Make it a great day.
