“I don’t think it’s healthy to take yourself too seriously.” – Payne Stewart

Professional golf is usually an individual sport. One in which I’m sure the average tour pro is very tempted to take themselves too seriously.

But for one week every few years the best players from America match up against the best player from Europe at the Ryder Cup.

Watching a bunch of world class golfers play for the team and their country instead of just for themselves brings out something great in all of them.

It almost feels like watching a college football team. The crowds are crazy. The rivalry is strong. Every match and shot a chance to become your teams hero.

The lesson for all of us as we start our week? Being part of a great team is better than anything you can do on your own. If you really want to do and become your best – embrace the team.

Make it a great day.

"Treat your body like a temple, not a woodshed. The mind and body work together. Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and spirit. If you take good care of it, your body can take you wherever you want to go, with the power and strength and energy and vitality you will need to get there." — Jim Rohn

Like a lot of Jim Rohn’s wisdom and quotes this one falls into the category of a reminder.

We all know that we should treat our body’s well.

Maybe I don’t treat mine like the wood shed, but temple would be a stretch.

Maybe when you read this quote, some aspect of your health came to mind.

Maybe your weight.

Maybe your diet.

Maybe exercise.

Maybe a bad habit you need to kick.

Whatever it was, pick one thing and make today the day you get started making your body a temple.

Make it a great day.

When I asked Maggie what to send out about the 11th anniversary of sending daily attitude emails, she said something about it being weird that I would send something out to celebrate my own genius.

Kids are good at keeping us humble…

My first thought though was of gratitude.

Gratitude for the nice notes in response to certain emails.

Gratitude for all of you putting up with the dumb emails.

Gratitude for letting me come into your email box with my fumbled attempts to understand the world in a way that adds value to your life.

For all the times I’ve failed, I’m sorry.

For the times the emails have been helpful, that has been more about God’s grace and your unique response to the words, I am sure of it.

Thanks for being a receiver of the daily attitude emails.

Make it a great day.

On Saturday Maggie and I got up early and drove to Indiana to watch Uncle Bill and Alex run the Spartan Beast Ultimate Obstacle Course Challenge Extravaganza.

The day was filled with watching people of every possible shape, size, age, color, height, fashion choice, etc. put themselves through a series of crazy obstacles (32) spread out over 13ish miles.

I think I started the day impressed with the runners, but a part of me thought they might be a little weird.

I mean, seriously, who gets up and thinks that physically torturing yourself for 4-6 hours sounds like a good idea?

But something happens after you hang around for a while. You start to think that maybe they aren’t that weird. Maybe this might be fun? Maybe challenging myself physically in a meaningful way would be good for me?

Luckily for me, I got out of there before doing anything too crazy.

It got me thinking though. What if you hung out with people like that all the time?

People who think exercise is a fun and good thing.

People who eat right.

People who purposefully seek out challenges in their lives to foster growth and personnel development.

You might end up a little weird.

Make it a great day.

PS – Life is also an opportunity to be the kind of person that other people want to spend time with so they feel inspired to be and do better.

I just wanna be happy

But if I keep on doing the things

That keep on bringing me pain

There’s no one else I can blame

If I’m not happy

If you’re tired of being the same

If you’re tired of things not changing

It’s time for you to get out the way

It’s so easy to complain

Addicted to the pain

You give your heart, they push it away

(But I got good news for ya)

Jesus knows just how you feel

Just let Him take the wheel (Hallelujah)

The love you need, He already gave

Lots of good thoughts in this one.

What came to mind while you listened?

Make it a great day.

A daily attitude email from a few years ago (2012!).

One last lesson I learned from the Steve Jobs biography.

He was mean.

High school bully mean. Three year old throwing a tantrum mean. Flat out mean.

He would yell and scream at employees, waiters and waitresses and pretty much anyone.

I came to two conclusions after listening to some of the stories.

First, it is not my place to judge. I am not the decider of how “good” or “bad” of a person he was or whether or not he “deserved” any of the good things that happened in his life. In fact, it reminded me of a quote from Abraham Lincoln that says something to the effect of “I can’t judge another man because If I had his genetics and his experiences, I would act in the exact same way.”

Second, regret is a bitter pill to swallow. While he may never have admitted it in any meaningful way, I believe that he regretted treating people this way. Listening to the book, you could almost hear this through the stories and quotes from Steve.

Despite all of his success and money and fame, he had regrets. And not little ones like “I should have had the tuna for lunch”, but large, daunting regrets like “Maybe I shouldn’t have treated my daughter that way.”

I finished the book convinced that negativity is bad for the soul and that no amount of other success in life will fill the gaping holes left by treating others poorly.

My sincere hope is that we all look at things like this as a wake up call.

Who could you be nicer to today?

Who do you want to spend more quality time with today?

Who needs that call from you today to brighten up an otherwise dreary day?

Make that call. Smile and give that person a hug. Take the extra 5 minutes to read one more book to the little ones.

It makes a difference. For them certainly, but more importantly, for you.

Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory. – Mahatma Gandhi

This is probably another sign that I am officially old, but I have thought a lot lately about the little lessons I learned while playing sports when I was younger.

One of the big lessons was that those times when I really did apply maximum effort, it worked.

Those times when I pushed harder than I thought I could always resulted in something I didn’t think I could achieve.

Looking back on it now, it really proves how dumb of a kid I was that I didn’t really figure it out then, but it worked every time.

I’m sure by now you are wondering how this applies to those of us who aren’t currently on a high school sports team.

Motivation.

It all starts there. We have to be extremely motivated in order to give maximum effort.

When it comes to motivation, the best advice I can give is to start where you are.

By that I mean to start with what motivates you, right now.

Sure, it would be ideal if you were more motivated by world peace than you are by looking cool, but if looking cool gets you going, go with it.

This may be immaturity speaking, but I think that our motivations will mature naturally as we seek to make a bigger and bigger impact. That’s why I think it’s ok to start small.

Want to fit into that bathing suit?

Impress that girl? (My wife….I sure hope she likes this email.)

Grab that new gadget?

Want those new cool shoes?

Crush the competition?

Just because it’s cool?

Go get it. Apply maximum effort. Check it off the list. Reflect, reassess and go for the next one with that same gusto.

Make it a great day.

"Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." – Mahatma Gandhi

This also reminds me of the idea of being faithful in the little things.

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that God cares about what is in our hearts.

Our attitude towards doing the seemingly insignificant matters as much (more?) as our attitude towards doing the seemingly significant.

How we wash the dishes matters.

How we drive matters.

How we think matters.

We can choose wisely or poorly.

Make it a great day.
